RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the protocol replacing WHOIS for domain registration lookups.

Instead of parsing unstructured plain text, you get proper JSON with consistent fields. It’s defined in RFCs 7480–7484 and already required by ICANN for all gTLD registries.

You can, but you’ll quickly run into problems:

• Every registry formats responses differently
• Contact data is buried in nested vcardArray structures
• You need to figure out which server handles each TLD

RDAP API does all of that for you and returns a flat, consistent JSON response. See the API docs for example responses.

TLDs like .com and .net use thin registries that only store basic data. The registrar (GoDaddy, Cloudflare, etc.) holds the rest.

Adding ?follow=true tells the API to automatically fetch and merge the registrar’s data — contacts, abuse info, and more — in a single call. Try it in the interactive docs.

Domain lookups return:
• Registrar (name, IANA ID, abuse contact)
• Registration, expiration, and last-updated dates
• Nameservers, DNSSEC status, and status codes
• With follow=true: registrant, admin, and tech contacts

IP lookups return:
• Network name, handle, and type
• Address range and CIDR notation
• Country and abuse contacts

ASN lookups return:
• AS name, handle, and type
• Number range and contacts

Entity lookups return:
• Name, organization, and handle
• Roles, status, and public IDs
• Contact info (email, phone, address)
